How To Choose The Right Oracle & Tarot Card Deck

Choosing An Oracle Deck

Oracle cards have been used for centuries as a tool for personal growth and self-discovery. The images and symbols on the cards can prompt intuitive insights and help you tap into your subconscious mind, inner wisdom, intuition, and spiritual support system.

The act of choosing an oracle deck is a personal and intuitive process. If there was only one principle you were going to follow, it should be this—trust your instincts.

But if you’re like me and prefer more tangible guidance and suggestions, this post will give you some tips on other things to consider. To see how some decks compare to others or for some suggestions, I’ve listed some of my favorites in this post.

Tips for finding “the right” oracle deck for you:

  1. Consider your intentions: What do you hope to achieve with your oracle deck? Are you looking for guidance, self-discovery, personal reflection, or spiritual connection? Your intentions can help guide you towards the right deck.

  2. Look at the artwork: The artwork on an oracle deck can have a profound impact on your experience with the cards. Because this is a visual medium and tool, look for a deck that speaks to you visually and feels appealing to your senses. Oracle cards often contain powerful symbols and images for you will offer deeper meaning and insight. Choosing a deck that has artwork, symbols, or themes that appeal to you will help you connect more deeply to the messages.

  3. In-store energy check: If you’re looking at decks in a metaphysical bookstore, most come with a guidebook that explains the symbolism and meanings of the cards. Read through the guidebook to get a sense of the deck's energy and types of messages to see if they would work and align with your intentions. Some decks have more big-picture conceptual messages where others are more direct and straightforward.

  4. Digital energy check: If purchasing your deck online, read the description provided by the creator to see how it “feels” compared to what you are looking for from a deck. I also find it informative to check out the deck’s webpage or the creator’s Instagram account. Personally, I like to do a vibe-check with the creator. The energy that the deck was created in and who it was created by becomes a part of the integrated personality of each deck.

  5. Trust your intuition: Ultimately, choosing an oracle deck is a personal and intuitive process. Trust your instincts and choose the deck that feels right for you. Don’t over-think it—there really isn’t a “right” or “wrong” choice.

  6. Stay open to trying out different decks: It will only help you understand yourself more to try out different decks so don’t worry about mixing it up to see which ones resonate with you the most. I have many decks that I prefer for different purposes and will change the decks I’m using based on what is happening and what I’m both experiencing and focused on in each season of life.

Whether you’re using oracle cards to connect more deeply to yourself and your intuition or to connect with spiritual guides, angels, and support systems, the benefits of integrating oracle cards into your daily life can be immeasurable.

If you find yourself getting more into your head about the choice than your heart, give yourself permission to go with what feels right over all else.
